This course is designed for all RRISD Kindergarten classroom teachers who are committed to turning their classrooms into richly literate reading and writing workshops using developmentally appropriate practices. The following is a partial list of topics that will be studied:
In this course, we will study teaching that fosters student independence and a growth mindset in our youngest learners, classroom systems and structures that support inquiry and collaboration, the development of a young child’s reading and writing skills over the course of a Kinder school year, taking a closer look at all components of balanced literacy, using formative assessments to plan for instructional next steps, the central role of planning in the teaching of reading and writing, and a trajectory of mini-lessons for supporting foundational literacy skills
