ONLINE - ALL - K-12 - Holy Graphic Novels, Batman!: Using Comics & Graphic Novels in the Classroom
Limited Capacity seats available

This course is designed for teachers of all subjects and levels.
Graphic novels offer text in small chunks, accompanied by images that assist readers in understanding without having to decode the meaning of each word. Therefore, the text is more accessible to ELLs, SPED students, and other struggling readers because comprehension is not solely reliant upon words; in short, the images help bridge students’ gaps in understanding that is gleaned from the words alone.
By offering alternative and ancillary texts that increase understanding by delivering the content at struggling readers’ instructional level, rather than their frustrational level, teachers will scaffold the learning for SPED students, ELLs, and other struggling readers—supporting their comprehension and empowering them to discuss content on par with their peers.
Participants will gain an understanding of:
contemporary literacy research that validates the use of graphic novels to assist struggling readers.
ways to incorporate comics and graphic novels into teaching.
the support of literacy skills through comics in all content areas.
Participating teachers will gain access to an all-level, all-subject, online bank of lesson plans to help incorporate comics and graphic novels into their curriculum.

ONLINE - Library Services - K-12 - Fun in a Phonebooth: Developing a Graphic Novel Collection
Limited Capacity seats available

Although graphic novels and comics can be effective means of supporting literacy, developing a graphic novel/comic/manga collection may lay beyond the comfort zone of some librarians. This online course will explore best practices and resources for selection. Focusing on a technical approach, librarians unfamiliar (or even uncomfortable with) the comic form will be able to make dispassionate, informed decisions. Beginning with a very basic discussion of the benefits of reading graphic novels, the course will largely focus on selection and selection aides—aiming to help librarians effectively incorporate graphic novels into a collection without having to become a superfan. This program will equip participants with criteria for assessment and valid resources to aid in making sound collection development decisions when navigating this terrain.

Attendees will learn about:
Advantages of a robust graphic novel collection.
Criteria for evaluating unfamiliar potential acquisitions.
Selection aides for identifying potential acquisitions.

Participants will gain access to an online resource bank of selection adies for comics and graphic novel collection development.
